South Peninsula Hospital Imaging provides advanced diagnostic and interventional services so patients can access the same high-quality scans, image-guided procedures, and preventive screenings typically found in larger medical centers right here in Homer.

From routine X-rays to advanced MRI and CT imaging, our experienced team combines modern technology with personalized care to support accurate screening and diagnosis and effective treatment planning. Our radiologists bring decades of combined experience and provide advanced interventional radiology services. This highly experienced team includes physicians fellowship-trained in Cancer Imaging and Intervention and Musculoskeletal Imaging. We are committed to staying at the forefront of imaging technology and ongoing professional training to ensure our patients receive the highest standard of care.

We work closely with departments across the hospital to ensure coordinated, seamless care. Ordering providers have direct access to our radiologists to discuss imaging findings and care plans. In addition to close collaboration with ordering physicians, our radiologists spend meaningful face-to-face time with patients, ensuring questions are answered and procedures are clearly explained.

Services

X-Ray and Fluoroscopy

X-rays provide fast, reliable images of bones, lungs, and other parts of the body. They are often the first step in diagnosing fractures, infections, arthritis, and many other conditions. Our experienced technologists work closely with radiologists to ensure accurate imaging and timely results.

Fluoroscopy uses real-time moving X-ray images to guide diagnosis and treatment. South Peninsula Hospital is home to the first tableside fluoroscopy system of this model in the United States, offering exceptionally high-resolution images with lower radiation exposure.

This technology allows our radiologists to remain at the patients side during procedures such as joint injections, swallow studies, and gastrointestinal imaging. A large bedside monitor provides clear visualization, improving precision, comfort, and safety throughout the procedure.

CT Scanning

CT scans provide detailed cross-sectional images of the body, allowing physicians to evaluate organs, bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues with clarity. Our 128-slice CT scanner delivers advanced imaging that supports cancer diagnosis and monitoring, trauma evaluation, and cardiac calcium scoring to assess heart disease risk.

This level of technology allows many patients, including those undergoing cancer care, to receive high-quality diagnostic imaging close to home.

MRI

MRI uses powerful magnets to create detailed images of soft tissues, joints, organs, and the brain. Our 1.5 Tesla MRI system provides high-quality imaging while maintaining patient safety and comfort.

Before entering the MRI suite, patients are carefully screened by a certified MRI technologist to ensure the highest level of safety. During the scan, patients are provided ear protection and may choose a preferred radio station to listen to. An intercom system allows direct communication with the technologist at all times, so patients never feel alone.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of organs, blood vessels, and developing pregnancies. At South Peninsula Hospital, our ultrasound department provides comprehensive services, including general ultrasound, vascular studies, and echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart).

Many facilities separate these services into different departments, while our technologists are trained to perform all three. This integrated approach allows for coordinated, efficient care and a high level of expertise across multiple types of ultrasound imaging.

Mammogram and Breast MRI Screening

Mammography remains the gold standard for breast cancer screening and diagnostic breast imaging. Our team provides both screening and diagnostic mammograms in a comfortable, accredited setting.

For patients at higher risk—such as those with a personal history of breast cancer, high-risk breast lesions, strong family history, or certain genetic traits—supplemental screening with breast MRI may be recommended. Breast MRI can provide additional detail beyond mammography in select patients. We encourage patients to speak with their provider to determine the screening plan that best fits their individual risk.

Image-Guided Procedures

Our radiology team provides advanced, minimally invasive procedures using real-time imaging guidance for precision and safety.

  • Pain Management and Joint Injections: Our team understands how chronic pain can affect your daily life. We are dedicated to providing safe, targeted treatments so patients can access advanced pain management without leaving the community. We perform image-guided steroid injections for back, neck, and joint pain, including arthritis and inflammatory conditions. Using real-time imaging allows our radiologists to place medication precisely where it is needed, improving comfort during the procedure and increasing the likelihood of meaningful relief.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation: A minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic back and knee pain by disrupting pain signaling nerves.
  • Fluid Drainage Procedures: Removal of excess fluid from the chest or abdomen using image guidance for safety and accuracy.
  • Biopsies: We perform a wide range of biopsies using CT, ultrasound, mammography, or other imaging guidance, depending on the type and location of the tissue being evaluated.

Preventive screenings

Preventive imaging helps detect disease early, often before symptoms appear. Many of these screenings are covered by insurance when guidelines are met.

  • Lung Cancer Screening: Low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer at earlier, more treatable stages in eligible patients.
  • Cardiac Calcium Scoring: A specialized CT scan that evaluates calcium buildup in the coronary arteries, helping assess risk for heart disease.
  • Bone Density Screening (DEXA and CT Bone Density): Bone density testing evaluates bone strength and fracture risk. In addition to traditional DEXA scans, we offer CT-based bone density imaging that measures trabecular (inner) bone, where bone loss often begins first. This can provide a more complete picture of spinal fracture risk and early bone changes.
