Homer Medical Center is a family medical clinic providing comprehensive primary and urgent care for patients of all ages, from infants to seniors. Our mission is to provide personalized, respectful and evidence-based effective care to all our patients. We also collaborate closely with Seaside Womens Care for midwifery and OB/GYN services and with Serene Waters Mental Health for behavioral health.

Our physicians and nurse practitioners bring extensive education, training, and experience in treating a wide range of medical conditions. Many of our team members hold specialty certifications, reflecting our commitment to clinical excellence. Our staff includes nationally certified medical assistants, certified wound care nurses, a certified oncology nurse, a medical-surgical nurse, board-certified family practice providers, and a board-certified pediatrician and pediatric nurse practitioner.

This cohesive, collaborative care team works together to ensure patients feel heard, respected, and supported. Our approach is grounded in trauma-informed care that prioritizes safety, trust, and clear communication. Services

Family Practice/Primary Care

Our family practice providers deliver comprehensive primary care for patients across the lifespan. Services include preventive wellness visits, including Medicare annual wellness visits, vaccinations, and medication management. We provide ongoing care for chronic conditions, including a certified diabetes nurse who offers counseling and education to help patients manage their health. We offer womens health annual exams and coordinate closely with Seaside Womens Care for midwifery and OB/GYN services. Our on-site diagnostic lab allows for convenient point-of-care testing for common conditions.

Pediatrics

Our board-certified pediatrician and board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner provide compassionate, evidence-based care for children from infancy through adolescence. Services include well-baby and well-child visits to monitor growth and development, preventive screenings, and immunizations. We also provide same-day acute care for common childhood illnesses and injuries, including asthma, allergies, ear infections, fever, flu, rashes, and minor injuries.

We participate in VacTrAK, Alaskas confidential Immunization Information System, ensuring accurate vaccine tracking and reporting. We also participate in the CDC-funded Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program, which provides no-cost vaccines to eligible children under age 18.

Medicare Wellness

Our certified wellness nurse provides "Welcome to Medicare" visits for new beneficiaries and annual wellness visits for established Medicare patients. These visits focus on preventive care, including recommended screenings, lab work, fall prevention, and safety planning. By proactively reviewing health history and preventive needs, we help ensure providers have the information necessary to address concerns efficiently during problem-focused visits.

Chronic Disease Management

For patients living with long-term conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, we provide ongoing monitoring and personalized treatment plans. Our team works with patients to evaluate the effectiveness of medications, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes, helping reduce complications and prevent flare-ups. Our certified diabetes nurse offers education and medication management to support a holistic, sustainable approach to care.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a hands-on approach used to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal concerns. Through gentle stretching, pressure, and resistance techniques, OMT helps improve mobility, reduce pain, and support the bodys natural ability to heal.

 

Wound Care

Our certified wound care nurses provide advanced wound management using evidence-based, gold-standard treatments and innovative interventions. We focus on promoting healing, reducing recovery time, and preventing infection, while supporting patients and caregivers throughout the healing process.

Occupational Health

Homer Medical Center providers are certified to perform occupational and regulatory physicals, including CDL (DOT), FAA, Coast Guard, and Merchant Mariner examinations, helping individuals meet employment and safety requirements.

Allergy Treatment

We partner with Peninsula Asthma and Allergy to provide local allergy injection services. Once patients are evaluated and prescribed treatment by the specialist, allergy serums are shipped to our clinic for administration. We follow established protocols and provide post-treatment monitoring, allowing patients to receive ongoing care close to home.

Medication Management

We provide comprehensive evaluations and medication management for ADHD, depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Care is delivered in coordination with counseling services offered through Serene Waters Mental Health, ensuring a collaborative and integrated approach to behavioral health.

What to Expect as a Patient

Scheduling and Appointment Types

We offer a variety of visit types, including acute illness visits, wellness exams, Medicare wellness visits, medication management, and chronic disease care. To schedule an appointment, give us a call. Same-day appointments are often available for urgent needs.

Check-In

When you arrive, youll be welcomed by our front desk team and guided through check-in. We ask patients to arrive about 15 minutes early to allow time for paperwork and screening forms. Many forms are emailed in advance so you can complete them before your visit and spend more time face-to-face with your provider.

Depending on your age and visit type, you may be asked to complete preventive screenings, including developmental and behavioral screenings for children, depression and anxiety screening for patients over age 13, and cognitive and fall risk screening for older adults.

Provider Visit

During your visit, a certified medical assistants will check your vital signs, review your medications, and discuss your primary concerns. To ensure we give each issue the attention it deserves, we typically focus on one or two priority concerns per visit. If additional concerns need more time, well help you schedule a follow-up appointment.

After-Visit Summary

At the end of your visit, youll receive an after-visit summary and any needed education. Prescriptions are sent electronically to your pharmacy of choice. Most pharmacies require a few hours to process prescriptions, so we recommend contacting your pharmacy directly to confirm when your medication is ready.

Prescriptions and Test Results

If you need a prescription refill, please contact your pharmacy first. The pharmacy will send us the refill request electronically. Please allow up to 72 hours for refill processing.

Any lab and test results will be shared through MyChart. You will be contacted directly if follow-up is needed.

Referrals

If you require a referral, our team will coordinate the referral and send the necessary information to the specialist. We recommend contacting the referred provider within a few days to schedule your appointment if you have not yet heard from them.

What are your hours?

We are open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. We have an after-hours clinic on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 – 8 p.m. We are open Saturday for acute visits only from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

What if something happens after hours?

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go directly to the Emergency Department. For urgent but non-emergency concerns, call the clinic first thing in the morning for a same-day appointment.

What ages do you see?

We care for patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors.

FAQS about Pediatric Care

When should I bring my baby in for care?

Well-baby visits are recommended one week after delivery and at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 24 months of age. These visits monitor growth, development, and immunizations.

What care do you provide for children?

We offer well-baby visits, annual well-child exams, developmental screenings, immunizations, and same-day sick visits. Annual visits are recommended after age two.

Do you see adolescents?

Yes. We provide care for adolescents ages 11–21, including annual preventive visits. These visits include time with a clinician, immunizations, and guidance on healthy behaviors.

When will my child transition to adult care?

Around age 14, we begin encouraging increased independence during visits. At age 18, patients legally become adults. We are committed to supporting a smooth transition to adult-centered care, including guidance on consent and privacy requirements.

My child is afraid of needles. What can you do?

We follow a trauma-informed approach to care, including thoughtful vaccine techniques, supportive language, positioning options, and accommodations for needle anxiety.

My child has a fever. Should I bring them in?

During office hours, our triage nurse can help guide you. Call the clinic and describe your child’s symptoms so we can determine the safest next step.

What types of visits do you provide?

We offer several types of visits, including:

  • Wellness visits: Preventive exams designed to monitor your overall health, including annual physicals and well-woman exams. These visits focus on screening, prevention, and long-term health planning.
  • Medicare wellness visits: Welcome to Medicare visits (within your first year of enrollment) and annual wellness visits (for established Medicare beneficiaries) focus on preventive screenings and health planning. New or changing medical concerns require a separate problem-focused visit.
  • Acute visits: For sudden illnesses or injuries that need timely evaluation, such as infections, asthma flare-ups, or worsening symptoms. When you call, please describe your symptoms in detail so we can determine the safest scheduling option. In some cases, we may recommend evaluation in the Emergency Department.
  • Chronic disease management visits: For long-term conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol disorders. These visits focus on monitoring progress, adjusting treatment plans, and preventing complications. Follow-up appointments are often scheduled in advance to ensure continuity of care.

Do you offer same-day appointments?

Yes. We offer same-day appointments for acute concerns such as ear infections, fever, or sudden illness. Call us as early in the day as possible so we can schedule you

I need help with non-medical needs. Can you help?

Yes. Our care coordinator can assist with durable medical equipment (DME), Meals on Wheels, transportation arrangements, in-home support services, Medicaid travel vouchers, and connections to community resources such as Kachemak Bay Care Coordination.

I need to cancel my appointment. What should I do?

We ask that cancellations or rescheduling requests be made at least 24 hours in advance. Appointments are in high demand, and early notice allows another patient to receive timely care. To cancel, please call us. If you reach voicemail, leave a detailed message. If youd like to reschedule, please include your phone number so we can return your call.

I missed my appointment. What happens next?

Missed appointments (no-shows”) are documented in your medical record. Reminder calls are provided as a courtesy. Patients are responsible for keeping track of scheduled appointments.

I left a message. When will I hear back?

Please allow up to 72 hours for routine messages. Urgent concerns are routed to a triage nurse during office hours.

FAQS about Test Results and Referrals

How will I receive my test results?

Results are shared through MyChart. Providers review all results and will contact you directly if follow-up is needed. Otherwise, you can view your results in the portal.

How do I log into MyChart?

Click the MyChart link under Quick Links” at the top of the page and follow the login instructions.

I was referred to another provider. What happens next?

We will send your referral and supporting documentation to the specialist. It may take a few days for processing. If you have not heard from the referred clinic within a week, we recommend calling them directly to schedule your appointment. We recommend confirming coverage with your insurance provider.

FAQS about Prescriptions

How do I get my prescription?

We send prescriptions electronically to your pharmacy of choice. Most pharmacies require two to three hours to process prescriptions. Please call your pharmacy before picking up to confirm it is ready.

How do I refill my prescription?

Contact your pharmacy directly. If you do not have refills remaining, the pharmacy will send us an electronic refill request.

How long does it take to process a refill?

Please allow up to 72 hours for refill requests. Plan ahead, especially before weekends or holidays.

Can I bring old or unused medications to the clinic?

We do not accept expired or unused medications. Medication drop boxes are available at Safeway, Ulmer’s Drug, and the local police station.

Insurance

Insured Patients

Homer Medical Center accepts all types of commercial insurance, including motor vehicle insurance. We are a preferred provider for most commercial insurances as well as government payers and will gladly bill any carrier as a courtesy at a patients request. We will bill your primary, secondary, and tertiary insurance. You are responsible for any deductible, co-insurance, or copay as assigned by your insurance. This amount is to be paid at the time of service.

Uninsured Patients

Homer Medical Center accepts patients who do not have insurance. Patients who pay at the time of service will be given a 25% discount. Self-pay patients are eligible to receive a 10% prompt pay discount if they pay their balance in full within 30 days of the first statement date. Patients without insurance are expected to pay their balance in full upon receiving their billing statement. For those unable to pay in full please contact our business office to set up a payment plan.

Worker’s Compensation

Homer Medical Center accepts all Workers Compensation Insurance. You must provide the name and the billing details of the workers compensation carrier at your first visit. We will bill your workers compensation insurance, although you will ultimately be responsible for services not covered by your workers compensation insurance.

Medicare

Homer Medical Center accepts and bills for traditional Medicare benefited patients as well as some Medicare Advantage PPO plans. Homer Medical Center will bill a Medicare HMO policy but these policies do not cover clinic services without a prior authorization or referral.

Medicaid

Homer Medical Center is currently accepting existing and new Medicaid patients. We do not bill out of state Medicaid or Medicaid HMO policies.

Tricare/HealthNet Federal Services

Homer Medical Center accepts Tricare for active duty Coast Guard and military members and their families. We are currently working on contracts with our Behavioral Health department to bill for patients with Tricare insurance.

VA Standard and VA Choice/TriWest

Homer Medical Center is proud to support Americas veterans. We accept VA Standard and VA Choice patients who have approved authorizations completed prior to their appointments. Please contact your local VA office or the Choice Program at 1-855-722-2838 for more information on how to obtain an authorization.
