South Peninsula Hospital’s Outpatient Infusion Center offers a broad and continually expanding range of IV therapies for patients in Homer and across the southern Kenai Peninsula. Patients can access the treatments they need close to home, from oncology treatments including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and maintenance therapies, to IV antibiotics, iron infusions, hydration, and immune therapies to bone-strengthening medications, biologics for autoimmune conditions.

Our nurses are highly trained in administering both routine and complex infusion medications, and receive ongoing education so we can keep adding new therapies in response to the needs of our community.

The Infusion Center is a small, welcoming space designed for comfort. We have two private treatment rooms, as well as a central therapy area, and counseling and education spaces. Oversized leather chairs, heated blankets, cozy pillows, personal entertainment options, and complimentary coffee and tea help create a calm, patient-centered environment. There is convenient parking and three entrances, including a private entrance leading directly into the center.

Whether you’re here for a quick 30-minute infusion or a multi-hour therapy session, you’ll find a quiet setting and a team that treats you with attentive, personalized care.

Cancer Care

Many cancer patients receive their chemotherapy and other infusions with us even if their oncologist is in Anchorage or out of state. South Peninsula Hospital also partners with Central Peninsula Hospital to offer a visiting oncology clinic, making it possible for patients to receive consultations, monitoring, and a significant portion of their cancer care locally. What to Expect as a Patient

Referral and Scheduling

Most patients start with an order from their provider. Once we receive it, we verify insurance requirements, check medication availability, and contact you to schedule your first visit. Some treatments require pre-authorization, which can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

Check-in

After you check in for your appointment, we will notify the pharmacy to begin preparing your medication while we get you settled and review your plan for the day. The time needed for pharmacy preparation is built into your scheduled appointment.

Treatment

Your nurse will check in with you throughout your infusion, monitoring your safety, answering questions, and coordinating with your provider as needed. Treatment lengths vary widely; some infusions take 30 minutes, others several hours. Many patients bring a book, music, or a friend for company.

Next Steps

Before you leave, we’ll schedule your next appointment and make sure you know how to reach us with questions. Whether you need help understanding your treatment plan, checking on an order, or talking through a concern, we’re always here to help.

FAQ

What types of treatments do you offer?

We provide a wide range of infusion therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, IV antibiotics, iron infusions, IVIG, hydration, anti-nausea medications, growth factors, bone-strengthening medications, and more. Our offerings continue to expand in response to the needs of our community.

Do you treat children?

We can treat some patients ages 12 and older, depending on the diagnosis, size, and medication required. We do not administer pediatric chemotherapy. Infants and young children often require treatment at specialized pediatric facilities. Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis in collaboration with the referring provider.

I think my doctor sent orders, but I haven’t heard from you. What should I do?

Please call us. Sometimes orders are routed incorrectly or arrive unsigned. We’re happy to look into it and get things moving.

Can I receive infusion treatment even if my specialist is out of town?

Yes. Many patients receive treatment here while their oncologist or specialist practices in Anchorage or out of state. You will need a local primary care provider to ensure someone can respond quickly if urgent issues arise.

I’m visiting Homer. Can I receive treatment while I’m here?

Often, yes. If your home specialist is willing to coordinate with a Homer provider, and you establish local care, we may be able to administer your treatments during your stay.

I’m a provider. How do I send over an order?

Please call to let us know an order is on the way; that helps us avoid delays. We accept orders through Epic or fax. Orders must include a complete, signed treatment plan (labs, fluids, pre-medications, medication, and monitoring instructions). If you’re unsure what to include, we’re happy to assist.

Do treatments require prior authorization?

Some do. Authorization times vary from a few days to several weeks depending on your insurance and the medication.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. One adult support person is welcome. If you plan to bring a child or someone who requires supervision, please call ahead.

Can I bring a service or support animal?

Service animals are welcome with advance notice. Emotional support animals are not permitted in the Infusion Center.

How do you protect immunocompromised patients?

We schedule appointments strategically and use private rooms for patients with severely suppressed immune systems. Our staff is highly attentive to minimizing exposure risks.
