South Peninsula Hospital’s Rehabilitation Department provides comprehensive physical, occupational, speech, hand, and pediatric therapies for both inpatients and outpatients of all ages. We are deeply committed to serving our community, so our neighbors can access high-quality therapy close to home, without long wait times or traveling outside the area.

Our diverse team includes physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, PT assistants, pediatric specialists, and certified hand therapists. Together, we provide coordinated, evidence-based care designed to help people regain independence, improve safety, reduce pain, and return to the activities they want and need to do.

We provide care for a wide range of orthopedic, neurologic, developmental, and chronic conditions, working with patients who are recovering from injury, surgery, illness, or changes in mobility, balance, speech, swallowing, or daily function. We also provide physical, occupational, and speech therapy for children, and are proud to be the only provider of pediatric physical therapy in Homer.

Services

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapists help patients restore strength, mobility, and balance following injury, illness, surgery, or chronic conditions. Treatment is personalized to each patient and may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, gait and balance training, pain management, and tailored home exercise programs.

We are the only clinic in Homer — and one of the few in Alaska — to offer the AlterG® anti-gravity treadmill, which allows patients to walk or run with up to 80 percent of their body weight supported, making it ideal for athletes recovering from injury, older adults improving mobility, and individuals rehabbing after neurological events.

We also provide specialized treatment for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), using repositioning maneuvers that reset” the inner-ear crystals that regulate balance.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy plays a critical role in rehabilitation after stroke, injury, surgery, or changes in function due to chronic conditions. Our occupational therapists help individuals safely and confidently perform daily activities, such as bathing, dressing, eating, household tasks, and safely getting around in the community. Care may include strength and coordination training, adaptive equipment recommendations, home and workplace safety assessments, and strategies to modify tasks for greater independence.

Speech Therapy

Our speech language pathologists work with both adults and children to evaluate and treat speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, and swallowing disorders. Therapy may focus on strengthening communication, supporting thinking and memory skills, improving vocal quality, or ensuring safe swallowing.

Among our specialties, we offer LSVT LOUD, an evidence-based intensive program for Parkinsons disease that helps recalibrate the voice for clearer, louder, more confident speech. Our team also performs modified barium swallow studies (scheduled through Imaging) to evaluate how swallowing is working and guide safe treatment plans.

Pediatric Therapy

Our family-centered, play-based pediatric services include occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy for children from infancy through adolescence. We help children reach developmental milestones, strengthen movement and coordination, build communication skills, and participate more fully at home, school, and in the community.

We treat children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, autism, sensory processing needs, speech and language delays, and those using augmentative communication or voice-output devices. We are proud to be the only pediatric PT provider in Homer.

Hand Therapy

As the only clinic in Homer offering certified hand therapy, we provide specialized care for conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and upper extremity. This includes trauma, repetitive stress injuries, nerve injuries, tendon damage, arthritis, and recovery after surgery. Treatment may involve manual therapy, custom splinting, strengthening, fine-motor training, and education to restore function and reduce pain.

What to Expect as a Patient

Referrals and Self-Scheduling

Most patients begin with a referral from their provider, but a referral is not necessary for care unless required by insurance. When a referral is sent to us, our team will call to help you get started. However, its always a good idea to reach out to us directly as well so we can schedule you as quickly as possible.

Our team will match you with the therapist best suited to your needs and schedule, or youre welcome to request a specific therapist and we will accommodate your preference whenever availability allows.

Before Your Appointment

Before your appointment, well ask you to set up a MyChart account if you dont already have one and complete your pre-appointment paperwork. If you need assistance at any point, our team is happy to help.

Initial Visit

At your initial visit, you will meet with your therapist to discuss your concerns, goals, and medical history. Your therapist will complete a physical evaluation and work with you to create a personalized plan of care. Together, you will determine the recommended frequency of visits — often one to two times per week, depending on your needs — and schedule follow-up appointments before leaving the office.

Ongoing Care

Ongoing therapy sessions typically focus on building strength, skills, confidence, and independence. As you progress, your treatment plan will be adjusted to ensure you continue moving toward your goals. Whether you are returning to work, navigating your home safely, participating in sports, or simply wanting to enjoy daily life with less pain, our goal is to help you move with greater ease and confidence.
