At South Peninsula Hospital, our Neurology Department provides expert evaluation and treatment for a wide range of conditions affecting the brain, nerves, and movement system. We care for patients with movement disorders, including tremor and other involuntary movements, as well as multiple sclerosis, migraine and headache disorders, Parkinsons disease, dementia, neuropathy, foot drop, gait disorders, dizziness, vertigo, and stroke-related concerns.

Our small, collaborative team takes time to listen, thoroughly evaluate, and build a treatment plan tailored to each individual. Led by Dr. Melissa Heiry, a movement disorder specialist, our team is committed to offering compassionate, high-quality neurological care close to home.

Services

Neurology

We evaluate and treat a broad spectrum of neurological symptoms and conditions, from headaches, weakness, and numbness to balance changes, tremor, memory concerns, and movement disorders. Care may include a detailed neurological exam, additional testing, diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and ongoing follow-up.

Botox

Botox can be used as a medical treatment for certain neurological conditions, including chronic migraine and some movement disorders. For patients with chronic migraine, Botox is commonly given on a recurring schedule to help reduce the frequency and severity of headaches.

Skin Biopsies

We offer in-office skin biopsies that can provide important diagnostic information for certain neurological conditions. This includes SYN-One skin biopsy testing, which may help support the evaluation of Parkinsons disease, dementia, and related disorders, as well as skin biopsy testing used in the evaluation of some types of neuropathy.

Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep brain stimulation, or DBS, can help some patients with Parkinsons disease manage symptoms when medication alone is no longer providing consistent relief. It is a surgical treatment that uses implanted electrodes and a small battery-powered device to deliver electrical stimulation to targeted areas of the brain.

Nerve Blocks

Nerve blocks are in-office procedures that may help relieve certain headache disorders, including migraine. By targeting irritated or overactive nerves, nerve blocks can provide temporary relief and may be used as part of a larger treatment plan.

What to Expect as a Patient

Referral and Scheduling

A referral from your primary care provider is required before your appointment can be scheduled. Our team will review the referral information and contact you with next steps. Appointment availability can vary, but we are currently scheduling patients about three to four months out.

Your First Visit

New patient visits are designed to be thorough. You can expect to spend time with Dr. Heiry reviewing your symptoms, medical history, and concerns in detail. Your visit may also include a physical and neurological exam to help us better understand what is causing your symptoms.

Testing and Follow-up

Depending on your condition, additional testing may be recommended. Some procedures are performed right in our office, while other tests may be completed through South Peninsula Hospitals Imaging Department or Laboratory. Once results are received, our team will review them and contact you about next steps, which may include a follow-up visit, diagnosis, and treatment plan.

Ongoing Care

Neurological care is often ongoing rather than one-time. Some patients return for continued monitoring and medication management, while others may receive recurring treatments such as Botox every three months. Patients recovering from stroke may also be seen for evaluation related to returning to work or driving.

Appointment Length

New patient appointments are typically about 60 minutes. Follow-up visits are generally 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the reason for the visit and the complexity of care. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early so we can complete check-in and help ensure you receive your full appointment time.
