What to Expect as a Patient

Diagnosis and Referral

Your surgical journey typically begins with your primary care provider or another specialist. If surgery is recommended, youll be referred to the appropriate clinic where youll meet with your surgeon to discuss your diagnosis, treatment options, and whether surgery is the right next step. If you decide to move forward, surgical orders are sent to the Surgery Department to begin scheduling and preparation.

Pre-Surgery

Once your procedure is scheduled, a Surgery Department nurse will contact you to review your medical history, medications, and any additional testing you may need beforehand. This is a great time to ask questions and make sure you feel prepared.

The day before your procedure, youll receive another call with your official arrival time and final instructions.

Surgery Day

On the day of surgery, youll check in and be guided to the pre-operative area, where youll meet members of your care team, including your nurse, anesthesia provider, and surgeon. They will review the plan with you and make sure all your questions are answered before you head to the operating room.

After surgery, youll recover in our recovery area under close monitoring. Depending on your procedure and your surgeons plan, you may go home the same day or stay in the hospital for additional care.

Recovery and Follow-Up

A few days after your procedure, a recovery nurse will call to check on how youre feeling, answer questions, and ensure your healing is progressing as expected. We also welcome your feedback — your experience matters to us.

FAQ

Do I need a referral?

Yes. Patients do not schedule surgery directly with the Surgery Department. Youll first be referred to a surgeon by your primary care provider or another specialist. After your clinic visit, if surgery is recommended, the surgeons office will send a surgical order to the Surgery Department to begin scheduling.

Do you perform emergency surgeries?

Yes. The Surgery Department is staffed to support emergency procedures 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you arrive through the Emergency Department and surgery is needed, our surgical team is available to provide timely care.

Who will be caring for me?

Your care team may include pre-operative, in-surgery, and recovery room registered nurses; experienced surgical technologists; Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs); and board-certified surgeons.

How do I get to the Surgery Department?

Please enter through the main hospital entrance (the Emergency Department entrance). Stop at registration to check in. From there, our team will direct you down the hallway to the Surgery Department on the right-hand side.

I need labs before my surgery. Where do I go?

Pre-surgery labs can be completed at the main hospital laboratory or at the walk-in lab at South Peninsula Family Care Clinic, located at 4201 Bartlett Street

Main Hospital Lab

Hours: Monday–Friday: 7 a.m.–6 p.m.
Saturday–Sunday: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Family Care Clinic Walk-In Lab Hours:
Monday–Friday: 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Closed 12–12:30 p.m. and on holidays.

No appointment is needed for lab work.

Why can’t I eat or drink before my procedure?

When you receive anesthesia, your bodys normal protective reflexes are temporarily relaxed. If food or liquid is in your stomach, there is a risk it could come back up and enter your lungs, which can cause serious complications such as pneumonia. Following fasting instructions carefully helps keep you safe during surgery.

How long will I be at the hospital on surgery day?

The total time varies depending on your procedure, but most patients should expect to be at the hospital for several hours. This includes preparation time, the procedure itself, and recovery monitoring before discharge.

Will I go home the same day?

Many procedures are outpatient, meaning you can return home the same day. Some surgeries require an overnight stay. Your surgeon will discuss this with you in advance so you know what to expect.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

Yes. If you receive anesthesia or sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for a period of time after surgery. For your safety, you cannot drive yourself.

What should I bring on surgery day?

Bring a photo ID, insurance information, a list of medications, and any paperwork you were asked to complete. Leave valuables at home and wear comfortable clothing.

What if I feel sick before my surgery?

If you develop a fever, illness, or new medical concern before your procedure, contact your surgeons office as soon as possible. In some cases, surgery may need to be rescheduled for your safety.

What is the difference between the General Surgery Clinic and the Surgery Department?

The General Surgery Clinic is where you meet with your surgeon in an office setting to discuss your condition and determine whether surgery is needed. The Surgery Department is where your procedure takes place.

Where will I do my follow-up care?

After surgery, youll follow up with your surgeon at their office. This may be the General Surgery Clinic, Renew Plastic Surgery, or with a visiting specialist at the Specialty Clinic, depending on your procedure.
