Next Upcoming Safe Sitter 2-day Course for Grades 6-8

The next upcoming Safe Sitter, Inc. course at South Peninsula Hospital will be held on Friday October 13th and Saturday October 14th from 9-2:30 both days. The Friday falls on a school-in-service day.
Safe Sitter teaches young teens in grades 6th-8th grade how to practice important safety skills, how to handle emergencies, how to treat illnesses and injuries, CPR basics, and more. In addition, students learn important business skills, like how to screen jobs, set a wage, and work with employers.

Join South Peninsula Hospital and Seaworthy Functional Medicine Clinic for “Down with Downey: Live at 5,” – a health, wellness, and functional medicine lecture series! MD and IFM-certified Dr. Rob Downey will lead an engaging presentation covering diverse topics, from thyroid issues and gut health to long Covid and fatigue.

Every second Thursday of the month, we’ll gather on Facebook Live to gain valuable insights and experiences from Dr. Downey, empowering us to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. Stick around for the live Q&A session afterward, where you can interact directly with Dr. Downey and get your questions answered!

Health Fair Exhibitor Applications Accepted

Exhibitor applications are now being accepted for the 40th annual Rotary Health Fair, set for Saturday, Nov. 4 from 9am-1pm at the Homer High School. The purpose of the Rotary Health Fair is to promote individual wellness and promote learning and education to improve one’s overall health.  Exhibitors are encouraged to provide learning centers or demonstrations to share their particular educational message.

New Walk-In Lab now Open

South Peninsula Hospital announces the opening of walk-in lab services at 4201 Bartlett Street, Suite 202B, co-located with South Peninsula Family Care. Individuals can receive most of the same outpatient lab services that are offered up at the hospital at this more convenient location from 8:30am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday. This service is open to any individual with lab orders, regardless of their referring clinic or provider. No appointment is necessary, and no advance registration needed. For more information or to check if your orders qualify, call the laboratory at 907-235-0338.

NOTE: Drug screening and urine collections cannot be conducted at this location.

Homer Steps Up! 2023 Results!

In its 7th year, the annual event is coordinated by South Peninsula Hospital, in partnership with SVT Health & Wellness, South Peninsula Behavioral Health, the City of Homer, SPARC and the Homer Chamber of Commerce.  South Peninsula Hospital Foundation provides a grant for the cash prizes and the weekly Homer Bucks prize drawings.

Over $3,000 in cash and prizes were awarded in the 2023 Homer Steps Up walking challenge that ran May 1-28, 2023. 665 individual participants (an increase over last year), on 70 total teams (an increase over 60 teams last year) made up of took a total of 165,129,433 steps. Together they walked the equivalent of over 3 times the earth.

New this year, the Homer Foundation sponsored $1000 for the top three teams to donate $500, $300 and $200 respectively to a local non-profit of their choice.

This year’s winning team, the Sweaty Betty’s, is the returning champion, and wins bragging rights, the traveling trophy, Champion T Shirts and a $500 award to a charity of choice. Sweaty Betty’s logged a cumulative average of 756,071 steps (actual total steps: 6,048,509). Team members were Jen Liston, Theresa Halpin, Samantha Keeley, Mary Liston, Cindy Llenos, Juley Kalugin, Lila Johnson and Melinda Erickson – Team Captain. They are donating their $500 to Homer Little League.

2d place team was The Blue Mile, very close on the heels of first place with 715,524 steps (cumulative average) and actual total steps: 3,577,630. Team members were Philip Christopherson, Shaun Green, Lisa Ravenscroft, Cathy Knott and Chris Stillford  – Team Captain. They are donating their prize money ($300) to Christian Community Church.

The 3rd place team was the Water Willies with a cumulative average of 488,371 steps and total actual steps of 2,930,177. Team members were Ralph Skorski, Sean Love, Michael Szocinski, Jason Hoffman, Todd Cook and Michael Swoboda – Team Captain. They are donating their prize money ($200) to Friends of Kachemak Bay State Park

Each week, 9 individual participants won Homer Bucks in a steps-based random prize drawing, one participant won each weekly question answer prize drawing for a Yeti mug, and 9 individual participants won cash prizes at the end of the challenge.  Visit homerstepsup.com or the Homer Steps Up Facebook page for more info and pictures!

Free Community Yoga Wednesdays in April

Free community yoga continues in April, presented by Erin Brege of Icy Mermaid Yoga. Erin is a certified yoga instructor, local Spanish teacher and global traveler who believes fully in the wellness power of yoga. Free community Yoga is every April in Wednesday from 6-7pm at SPARC, 600 Sterling Highway. All ages and abilities are welcome. South Peninsula Hospital is seeking a vendor to replace the exterior lobby door. The RFP is attached. Deadline to submit is March 3.
