“Brake for Breakfast” kicks off a month filled with breast health awareness activities

South Peninsula Hospital is partnering with numerous organizations throughout October to generate awareness and information surrounding the importance of cancer screenings and prevention as part of overall breast health. All offerings are free and open to the public.

Brake for Breakfast will be held Tuesday, October 3 from 7-9am. Ladies can drive through for grab and go bags, filled with breakfast goodies and loads of breast health information. Drive through stations will be set up in Homer, Fritz Creek and Anchor Point. (While supplies last.)

  • Homer: Alaska Islands & Ocean parking lot, hosted by South Peninsula Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Fritz Creek: Fritz Creek General Store parking lot, hosted by Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic
  • Anchor Point: NTC Health Clinic Parking lot at 33880 Sterling Highway, hosted by NTC Health Center

First Friday Fundraiser will be Friday, October 6 from 5-7pm at Grace Ridge Brewing. This will include a silent auction sponsored by friends of Kachemak Bay Family Planning, raising funds for a mobile mammography bus to visit the southern Kenai Peninsula.

Women’s Health will be the focus at Wellness Wednesday, October 11 from 5-7pm. Midwives from the West Wing will lead a brief presentation on breast health, importance of self-exam, the role a midwife plays in women’s health and more, followed by refreshments and a one-hour yoga class. Free, and open to all.

Mammos & Mocktails/SPH Imaging Department Open House will be Thursday, October 19 from 4:30-6:30pm. Tour the department, meet the providers and staff, ask questions and check out the 3D mammography unit! Enjoy mocktails, chair massage, door prizes, snacks and more!

Breast Health Panel Discussion will be Tuesday, October 24 from 6-7:30 pm at Kachemak Bay Campus. Panelists Dr. Robin Holmes (KBFPC), Dr. Edson Knapp (Medical Director, SPH Radiology Department), Dr. Sherry Johnson (Far North Surgery), and Kim Donich (local breast cancer survivor) discuss screening guidelines, personalized care, mammo myths, how to navigate abnormal results, current surgical options, and more. Enjoy refreshments and door prizes.
